Sea stars do not have brains or any blood. They filter water to pump nutrients through their nervous system.

They used to be called starfish but since they’re not technically fish, sea stars is a better name. They are echinoderms. Your echinodermis is showing!

They can live for over 30 years.

They are NOT fresh water creatures.

While sea stars can regenerate limbs, it takes many months, even up to a year, to fully regrow them.

They can reproduce asexually from a lost limb or even by releasing sperm and gametes (eggs) into the water. Fertilized gametes fall to the seafloor and develop sea star larvae which end up growing into sea stars.

Some may have over 30 arms

The coolest thing though... look how they eat. They essentially “release” their stomachs and liquefy their meals then suck it back in.

I used to work for a marine construction company and the coolest project I got to work on was an aquaculture farm in the East Passage of the Nar ragansett Bay. The farm was set up to farm mussels in baskets suspended from long lines and secured to 4000 pound underwater anchors. We had to set the anchors and run the downlines, making sure that the uplines were not tangled.

Apparently, in the old days, the bay was full of mussels, but the numbers were reduced by the starfish, which eat the mussels. Obviously the practice of cutting the starfish in half when they were found in the bycatch was not overly effective.

While some species can extrude their stomachs to consume a large meal, all get most of their food by using small tube feet which are all over their bodies to transport food to their mouth.
